Stewart's Rose Manor Funeral Service was first founded by the late Mr. John R. Stewart and has served the greater Richmond area for more than 5O years. During the early 1960s, Mr. John R. Stewart became the sole proprietor. Rose Manor is the only African American owned and operated mortuary in Contra Costa County. Rose Manor's sole principle is based on providing complete and dignified services at a competitive price.

Mr. John Stewart became a respected community leader because of his commitment to service. He supported the development of churches, businesses, and the community. He sponsored the local baseball little league, encouraging youngsters to excel.  He also acquired affiliations with several professional and social organizations.  Among his affiliations were: 

  • The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (of which he was a life member)
  • Both the National and California Funeral Director's and Embalmers Associations (where he served as president for both organizations)
  • 33rd Degree Mason
  • Victorian Consistory #35 of Oakland, California
  • Menelik Temple' #36 order of Shriners
  • International Rotary of Richmond, California
  • Black Business and Professional Men's Organization
  • Board Member for the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.

 

In honor of her father's memory, Ms. Lydia Stewart continues his legacy. She currently owns and operates Stewart's Rose Manor Funeral Service and adheres to the standard of excellence established by her late father.
